Afiz Abdulla Komandoo Maldives Resort

Komandoo Celebrities: Afiz Abdulla

Komandoo’s greatest asset are its team members and among them is also a person who’s been the informal Chief Everything Officer at the resort for over a decade – Afiz Abdulla, IT Manager. Afiz is an essential part of the Komandoo Family and his colleagues and guests have a lot more than solving all those ‘Help, I broke the internet!’ cases to thank him for.

Afiz, from Velidhoo island in Noon Atoll, joined us as a newly-graduate student in 2007 and spent the first year and a half working in housekeeping before being presented with a ‘simple’ challenge: set up an internet network and communications infrastructure. Already possessing a lot of IT knowledge at that point and with some additional training, Afiz successfully helped modernise Komandoo. Rather than still piggybacking on Kuredu’s signal and Wi-Fi being available only at the reception, the coverage was extended to all villas in 2012, and today guests can be online with up to 8 devices and can keep in touch with their loved ones hassle free (and with great speed thanks to fiber optics), which for an island in the middle of an Indian Ocean is not as self evident as one would think! Complimentary Wi-Fi is also available in most public areas, except for restaurants and the pool area to respect guests’ privacy and to cling on to some of that pre-Wi-Fi charm that we believe it’s important to have, especially at such a stunning and relaxing place as the Maldives.

To keep up with guests’ expectations, a series of other improvements have also been put in place: an interactive in-villa IPTV that provides suggestions for things to do at the resort and makes information you may need during your stay handy, as well as 45 channels in many languages and 40 videos on demand for those hours when you simply want to seek shade and enjoy the privacy of your villa.

Afiz also set up the new music streaming system that brings all your favourite tunes to restaurants and bars, he’s responsible for arranging boat transfers, and has recently expanded his area of expertise also to landscaping, so you can look forward to an even better looking Komandoo soon! Afiz is also the captain of the resort’s volleyball team and a member of the fire brigade, an avid football player and Manchester United fan, a snorkeller, an EFR-certified diver and a wonderful colleague. It doesn’t come as a surprise that he received the flattering Ambassador of Komandoo Award in 2017, the only one given so far, for the appreciation of his outstanding services and contributions to the resort.

Komandoo Celebrities: Rashadh

A new month, a new team member to be put in the spotlight! It is with great pleasure to feature Ibrahim Rashadh, Island Host, in the Komandoo Celebrities series. Rashadh is a friendly and helpful member of the Front Office team and has been going the extra mile since February this year when he joined us.

Rashadh is one of the Island Hosts who are responsible for ensuring your stay at Komandoo is as convenient and hassle-free as possible. Upon arrival at the resort, Rashadh takes care of the check-in formalities, escorts you to your villa and is on hand throughout your holiday to handle any requests you may have to make sure all your expectations of the Maldives are met. When the sad, sad departure day comes, Rashadh is there for your check-out, to cheer you up – and to make sure you actually leave…

What Rashadh finds especially wonderful about working at Komandoo is the excellent teamwork and the support and appreciation by the management as well as the myriad of activities available; he’s an avid snorkeller himself and you can also see him play top-notch football.

Rashadh, the helpful person he is, shares some tips on Komandoo highlights:

‘I would stay in a Jacuzzi Beach Villa, preferably at the very end of the island due to the proximity of Thundi Bar. I’d definitely join an excursion or two, including the Sunset Cruise and keep my fingers crossed for large pods of dolphins putting on a show. The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets at Falhu Restaurant are astounding and everyone should sample as many delicacies as possible. Evenings at Kandu Bar are lovely, especially Maldivian nights – all guests love those as they’re full of culture, good music and socialising.’

On behalf of the entire team, we would like to thank Rashadh for being a brilliant colleague and doing an excellent job when it comes to making sure the resort’s guests have a memorable and repeat-worthy time at Komandoo.

Komandoo Adults Only Maldives Resort

Komandoo – Sprinkled with Romantic Experiences

Make the most of a getaway with your loved one by sprinkling the holiday with extra romance in all that you do. Rated as one of the leading romantic resorts in Asia, Komandoo is one of the few truly adults-only resorts in the Maldives and it lives up to even the highest expectations every step of the way. From beautiful surroundings to the intimate atmosphere, a perfect romantic escape awaits couples choosing Komandoo as their bolthole in which to get away from the rest of the world.

Aside from being the absolute dream location for a wedding or honeymoon, Komandoo has lots of ways to sprinkle extra romance. From the special treats to the everyday, love is always in the air!

Couples will delight in the spa treatments they can indulge in together as well as the luxury sailing trips and even a spot of adventure in the ocean with a Discover Scuba Diving experience – unmissable if memory-making is on the agenda.

If the way to your loved one’s heart is with delicious food, nothing says love quite like a candlelit dinner on the beach for two, intimate just-the-two-of-you dining in your villa, a gourmet feast at Aqua or even the unforgettable experience of dining under the ocean at neighbouring Hurawalhi Maldives’ 5.8 Undersea Restaurant.

Even the everyday occurrences spell out romance at Komandoo – sampling delicious cocktails whilst watching the magnificent Maldivian sunsets, taking a stroll, hand-in-hand, along a moonlit beach, listening to live music together at Kandu Bar, gazing at the impossibly bright starlit sky and making a wish on the shooting stars.

Komandoo is a destination made for love, so sprinkle it with romantic experiences from start to finish.

Komandoo Celebrities: Sohag

What adds a special allure to Komandoo is the resort’s lush, tropical landscape, and one of the team members who is to credit for upkeeping the island’s vegetation and overall landscaping is Sohag Bepari, Garden Supervisor. Coming from Bangladesh and working in the Maldives since 2003 (he was transferred to Komandoo from sister resort Kuredu in 2011), Sohag’s excellent performance has not only been consistently recognised by the resort’s guests, but also by his colleagues and the management, earning him the flattering Supervisor of the Month accolades in 2015 and 2016.

Outside of his daily responsibilities, Sohag finds special pleasure in creating flower bouquets for the exchange of vows ceremonies. In his spare time, he enjoys playing cricket, volleyball and watching movies.

You may or may not know that a wide assortment of vegetables and herbs are grown on the island; Sohag and his colleagues currently grow lettuce, chili, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, mint, aloe vera and rosemary; what’s more, flowers used in your bed decorations, jacuzzi indulgence and at the spa (orchids, hibiscus and vinca/periwinkle plants) are also coming from the on-site nursery. The orchid farm is Sohag ‘s favourite place on the whole island and he’s especially honoured when he gets to share his passion of our guests during the complimentary back of the house tour.

We are certain those of you who’ve meet Sohag will agree he’s a polite, friendly and cheerful person, and on behalf of the entire team we wish to thank him for his dedication, passion and for being a valued member of the Komandoo Family. We can’t wait to see all the landscaping improvements and new plants in the villas Sohag is planning!

Komandoo’s VVIPs: Resident Hawksbill Turtles

Komandoo is fortunate to be a resort located smack bang in the middle of what is considered one of the Maldives’ best turtle hotspots. Thanks to the partnership with the Olive Ridley Project (their Turtle Biologist and Educator, Dr. Stephanie Köhnk, is based at the Marine Center at the neighbouring Kuredu), we know that a total of 287 sea turtles have so far been identified in Lhaviyani Atoll. Of these, 170 are green sea turtles, meaning that nearly half of all the green sea turtles in the Maldives live in this area. What’s interesting though is that it’s the hawksbill turtles that are more common around Komandoo. Out of the 103 individuals identified in the atoll, 24 hawksbill turtles have been recorded to reside or pay visits to Komandoo’s house reef.

Our earliest recorded turtle sighting is of Cousteau, a hawksbill that was first documented at Komandoo in December 2012. Cousteau is indeed the most sighted turtle of the island, by now 18 times.

Another prominent turtle from Komandoo is Spud. This juvenile is easy to identify because it has a dent in its shell, most likely an old healed shark bite mark.

One of the newest hawksbills is a juvenile called Lucien, which was first sighted in February 2018 and adopted by two guests who met the little turtle during a snorkeling tour.

The hawksbills can be seen feeding or resting on the reef, but the resting ones are really well camouflaged, so keep your eyes peeled the next time you snorkel at Komandoo’s easy-to-access and shallow house reef, and speak with the dive center team about the famous ‘Turtle Airport’ for you to also see hawksbills’ cousins, green sea turtles, guarding an outreef nearby.

Komandoo Celebrities: Dammika

A new month, a new Komandoo Celebrities episode! You’ve been expressing your appreciation of the series as it allows you to take a trip down your Komandoo memory lane and remind you of all the wonderful team members that have contributed to your holiday being extraordinary. You will certainly be pleased to have your memory refreshed with another bright personality on our team – Dammika, the resort’s Bar Supervisor.

Dammika Prabath Chandrasekara Rajapaksha Gedara, a.k.a Dammi, originally from Sri Lanka, joined us at Komandoo in 2012 but has been in the Crown and Champa Resorts family already since 2004 and had worked on a liveaboard and at Kuredu in various bartending and butler positions.

You can cross paths with Dammi at Thundi and Kandu Bars as well as at Falhu and Aqua Restaurants, and those of you who experienced his attentiveness and attention to detail before won’t be surprised that he was selected as Supervisor of the Month already twice over the past two years.

Dammi is an integral part of the Komandoo Family, which is also evidenced by several other responsibilities he’s entrusted with, such as the coordination of all special food and beverage events, including our weekly get-togethers with repeater guests. Among many other guests whom Dammi has woven friendship ties with (and whom he doesn’t blame for nicknaming him ‘big ears’!) are also David and Sarah who absolutely love the special ice coffee he always spoils them with. He also still remembers one of his birthdays when a guests treated him to a cigar, which he was extremely grateful for and made him feel appreciated even more.

If you’re new to Komandoo, be sure to order what Dammika says are the most popular cocktails: Komandoo Cooler, Thundi Sunset & Piña Colada, and go for a stroll along the beach at sunrise, which Dammika believes is the most beautiful time on the island.

Dammi certainly is the embodiment of Komandoo’s excellent service and honest, unpretentious care for the well-being of the resort’s guests. That being said, ‘Cheers, big ears, to many more years of exemplary service at Komandoo!’ on behalf of the entire team and, we dare say, to all guests who know you!

Komandoo Celebrities: The Sweeper Ladies

Rather than just one celebrity this month, there is a whole team of them – the Komandoo Sweeper Ladies: Mariyam, Haleemath, Kudda Hawwa, Hawwa, Aaida, Sobira and Khadeeja.

Komandoo Resort is one of the Maldives’ treasures, small and boutique as well as lush and picture perfect, but nature can’t take all the credit for its beauty – it gets a helping hand (or 14!) from the team of seven sweeper ladies. The ladies wear distinctive green full-length dresses, inspired by one of the traditional dresses of the Maldives, ‘Digu hedun’, which is a full-length dress made in different colours. They arrive each day on a dhoni from neighbouring local island, Hinnavaru, and work all day sweeping the paths and beaches clear of fallen tropical vegetation. Once at home, they enjoy spending time with family and friends, as well as rooting for their favourite football team.

Anyone who has spent time here on Komandoo will know that these ladies always have a friendly smile on their faces, are happy to chat with guests and work tirelessly to make sure their allocated area is clean and tidy.

Our Sweeper Ladies are an integral part of the resort’s team (Mariyam, Haleemath and Kuda Hawwa have been with us for 12 years!) and Komandoo is, as is the case for many of you, their second home.

On behalf of the resort team and all guests, a big thank you to all of them for helping to keep Komandoo so beautiful!

20th Anniversary Competition: Special Mentions

Komandoo’s 20th anniversary competition is now closed for entries and we will soon announce the winner, who will 1) have to pinch themselves to realise they’ve really won a free holiday, and 2) have to pinch themselves harder to fully grasp the holiday is to the Maldives!

But before we reveal whose submission we found the most original, creative and worthy of the prize, allow us to thank every single one of you who participated. Our team were eagerly awaiting each new submission and were truly impressed with your efforts: you made Komandoo-inspired cocktails, paintings, built smoothie carts and Thundi Bars, dug your toes in the powdery white snow – all of you have expressed your wish to visit Komandoo by creating a piece of paradise at home in incredibly creative ways.

We’re keeping you in suspense for a wee bit longer and invite you to take a look at a selection of entries we liked best:
